The Short Answer
“So, what do you do?” I have a tough time answering this question. I have to sort of think about which hat I’m wearing at the time. When wearing my artist hat, it would go something like “I’m a mixed media artist.” My designer hat, however, would go something like “I’m a freelance art director and interactive content designer”. But then of course there’s also the Photoshop instructor hat, the photographer hat and to a lesser degree (or not, depending on your priorities of course) the coffee drinker hat, the mountain biker hat, and the video game junkie hat. Still, none of the answers get to the core of what I do so much as they allow me to easily label what I am. So I guess the short answer to the question at the top of the paragraph is… “I create visual media”.
The Details
I am a creator of visual media. I went to school for Illustration and Theatrical Design which, after college at California State University Long Beach, led me across the southern United States, working in regional theaters such as Texas Shakespeare Festival, Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the New York City Opera. Upon returning to California, I held positions in the special effects industry as well as video post production. I first became exposed to digital media while working as an assistant at 525 Post Production in Hollywood. I started learning a relatively new application called Photoshop (version 2.5) and I was hooked. For the past decade plus, I’ve art directed and/or created interactive content for amazing companies like BMW, Warner Brothers, Sony, Universal Studios, Hershey’s, and a host of others. Recently, I added Photoshop Instructor to my resume in accepting a position teaching Photoshop at a photography school here in Southern California. Few people are lucky enough to get to do what they love, but as cliche as that sounds, I am one of those few. I absolutely love what I do and am always looking for a new creative challenge to solve. Do you have a project that could use a pair of new eyes on it? Email me, I’d love to talk with you.
