While surfing the Interwebs today, I happened upon yet another fantastic piece of design by Chip Kidd. Though it’s similar to the poster he did for Three Days of Rain, the added contrast and granularity give it a very different feel. I love his work, especially his Cormac McCarthy covers. There’s a pretty hysterical video up on his site now. It’s a promo for his new novel, The Learners.

I just re-ordered some Palomino Graphite’s today. If you are a fan of pencils, I highly recommend trying them. Personally, I love pencils…more of an obsession, really. I don’t horde boxes of ultra-rare, out of production keepsakes, purchased for hundreds of dollars on eBay, mind you. I love pencils I can use. One of my favorite pencils are the aforementioned Palomino Graphite HB’s. They produce gorgeous, velvety lines and are just a joy to sketch or write with. Many a pencil connessiur have named these the successors to the now legendary Blackwing 602 (No longer in production, “602’s” regularly fetch prices of more than 30 dollars each on eBay). I have vague memories of the mythical Blackwing. It was the pencil of choice of both my grandfather and my father. I was too young to realize what I was being given to doodle with, instead put off by the funky square eraser. I wish I had a few of them today, but then again…would I use them knowing what they have become? Thankfully, in addition to the Palomino’s, there are a number of very fine pencils out there in the market: the Mirado Black Warrior, the Faber-Castell Grip 2001 and the Staedtler Noris Ergosofts are all excellent choices for feeding your own pencil obsession.

Last night was the opening reception for the dA Gallery’s annual “Simply Red” show. What a great time…some really fantastic work this year. It also marked the first time that I have shown any of my new work in public. Show curator Rolo Castillo called my pieces “little jewels” and placed them in their own display case, rather than hanging them. So cool! It was brilliant to catch little bits of commentary and discussion as people looked at the work… I need some time to process how amazing this is, but for now to my family and friends who came out to see the work…thank you! Some of you came from quite a ways, and I really appreciate it. Also a huge thank you to Rolo and Ashley for putting me in this show and in such a wonderful way…
