My paintings are stories. Some are vignettes of a possible past, while others caution us of a future yet to come. But all are an attempt at a sort of visual narrative. Even those pieces that appear on the surface to be merely abstractions of color and texture are trying to say something. Layers of color, texture, dramatic imagery and lost and found collage elements are combined to create thought provoking, emotional pieces. Themes of loss, hope, despair and triumph are explored in many of my paintings. Though I build a back story to each piece, I seldom reveal it entirely, instead choosing to allow the viewer to bring their own thoughts and experiences to what a particular piece means to them.
My process is very much an ongoing evolution. At the moment, it is a fusion of both analog and digital elements. Textural backgrounds built with layers of acrylic color, paper, and gel mediums become the texture over which pigment ink emulsion transfers tell the real story of the pieces. Often, typographic elements and bits of seemingly random ephemera are layered in to creating subtle details that enhance the depth and visual interest of the piece.
